Bhubaneswar (Odisha) [India], February 12:  Reinforcing its unwavering commitment to safe mining operations, India’s largest producer of aluminium Vedanta organised the latest edition of its Annual Mines Safety Fortnight (AMSF) at its Jamkani coal mine in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.

The two-week-long programme, organised in collaboration with the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS), witnessed enthusiastic participation of over 500 employees and business partners.

While the programme focused on the theme: “Aapka pariwar aapka intezar kar raha hai”, it emphasized on the critical importance of safety protocols to prevent accidents and ensure well-being of employees.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Prafull Ranjan Thakur, Director of Mines Safety, DGMS Bhubaneswar, said, “I would like to congratulate the Jamkani coal mine team of Vedanta Aluminium for successfully organising the Annual Mines Safety Fortnight Programme. The team’s commitment to holding regular safety drills and awareness programmes, strict adherence to safety protocols and a secure one-way access road for heavy earth moving machinery, sets a high benchmark for the industry.”

Highlighting Vedanta Aluminium’s safety-first culture, Mr. David Stone, CEO (Coal Mines) Aluminium, said, “As an organization, safety has been an integral part of our core values, and ensuring a zero-harm environment at the workplace remains our key objective.”

“We are accelerating this goal through consistent implementation of best practices across all operational levels and creating a seamless framework for compliance. The Annual Mines Safety Fortnight initiative demonstrates our commitment to fostering a ‘culture of care’ and ensuring a secure environment for all stakeholders,” added the CEO.

Throughout the fortnight, the mines team of Vedanta Aluminium proactively raised awareness about safety among its employees, their families, and local communities through regular workshops. These include defensive mock drills, fire safety sessions, first aid training programmes and road safety awareness drives.

A key highlight of the initiative was the safety inspection carried out by an external AMSF team of 10 experts, comprising an Internal Safety Organisation (ISO) observer and senior officials from Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL). The safety evaluation underscored Vedanta Aluminium’s steadfast commitment to upholding the highest safety standards across its mining operations.

I dwell in the in-betweens—never sure, never boisterous. Hesitant and obstinate, I see what I'm doing through to completion in ways that never map it out. As a writer, I embrace the grey and the neglected. Nature grounds me, words define me, and I've made peace with being slightly out of step.
