New Delhi (India), November 24: Ulcerative Colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease, which causes inflammation and ulceration of the inner lining of the colon and rectum. The inflammation usually begins in the rectum and sigmoid colon and spreads upward to the entire colon. Ulcerative colitis rarely affects the small intestine.
Usually, patients of Ulcerative Colitis complain, bloody diarrhea, sudden urge to defecate, mucus and pus in the stool, pain in the left lower part of the abdomen. Researchers of Modern Medicine consider it an autoimmune disease, where immune cells attack the epithelial cells in the colon. Genetic factors, environmental factors, long time use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), severe psychological stress, excessive consumption of milk products and use of oral contraceptive pills also play a role in the causation of this disease. In one group, Aegle marmelos, Andrographis panniculata, Mesua ferrea, Holarrehna antidysentrica, Punica granatum, Symplocos racemose, Salmalia malbarica herbs are used and in other group Boswellia serrata, Cyperus rotundus, Zingiber officinale, Gymnema sylvestra, Berberis lyceum, Curcuma longa, Myristica fragrans are used.
