New Delhi [India], January 10: Indian mythology meets contemporary storytelling in The Rising of Dhanush, the debut novel by Dhawalraj Parmar. A thrilling tale of reincarnation, vengeance, and heroism, the book introduces Karan Keshav, a reincarnation of Karna from the Mahabharata, reimagined as a modern-day vigilante. With its unique blend of mythology, crime-fighting, and futuristic technology, Parmar crafts a narrative that is as thought-provoking as it is action-packed.

At its heart, as Dhawalraj puts it, The Rising of Dhanush tells the story of Karan Keshav, an orphaned young man raised in the jungles of Timira, where he hones his archery skills. Returning to Sun City after a decade to uncover his father’s killers, Karan finds himself drawn into a dangerous underworld of crime and corruption. Operating as the masked vigilante “Dhanush,” he takes on an alliance of criminal masterminds.

As Karan balances his dual life as a crime fighter and a member of an archaeology team, his quest for justice grows increasingly perilous. The plot thickens with the introduction of futuristic technology, a mysterious killer shadowing Karan, and the secrets of Sun City’s billionaire scientist, Sibu Roy.

Dhawalraj’s story thrives on its dynamic characters, both allies and foes. Karan’s allies include Sam, an archaeologist and his confidant; Kali, a fierce warrior with her own vendetta against Han; and Vrisha, Karan’s love interest and a skilled archer from his past. Together, they form a formidable team to take on Sun City’s criminal underbelly.

However, their adversaries are no less compelling. From Han’s ruthless daughter, the Hunter Girl, to Sibu Roy, whose high-tech experiments blur the line between man and machine, the villains add layers of complexity and danger to Karan’s mission.

What sets The Rising of Dhanush apart from other books of its genre is its ability to merge ancient mythology with contemporary themes in both a factual and yet fictionalized way. The story draws heavily from the Mahabharata, particularly the character of Karna, whose struggles with loyalty and identity resonate throughout the novel. Parmar reinterprets these themes in a modern setting, exploring issues of justice, morality, and the impact of technology on humanity.

Karan’s transformation into Dhanush—complete with a new costume and upgraded weapons—evokes the superhero genre while staying grounded in the rich cultural heritage of Indian mythology. This blend of myth and modernity creates a unique narrative voice, making the book a standout in contemporary Indian fiction.

A fan of Indian mythological tales, Dhawalraj says, “I have always been fascinated by our rich history and mythology and have always wanted to explore them in my strorytelling. The idea of this book just gave me the opportunity to merge them with a modern narrative and hopefully I’ve been able to do justice to it.”

It’s no surprise then that his first book takes on these themes. Born in Vadodara and raised in Ahmedabad, Dhawalraj combines his academic background in analytics with his passion for storytelling. He has set out to create a new era of Indian heroes, and The Rising of Dhanush is not just a standalone novel but the first instalment in a planned series that promises to delve deeper into Karan’s journey and the challenges ahead.

Dhawalraj’s ability to weave intricate plots with compelling characters stems from his analytical mind and deep understanding of storytelling. His debut work reflects his ambition to bridge traditional Indian epics with contemporary sensibilities, offering readers a fresh perspective on timeless tales.

Beyond its thrilling action sequences and plot twists, The Rising of Dhanush tackles several profound themes. Karan’s journey is one of self-discovery, grappling with the weight of his reincarnated identity and his quest for justice. The novel also questions the role of technology in society, as seen in Sibu Roy’s experiments with superhuman capabilities and the creation of the exoskeleton “Project Kavach.”

These themes are not just confined to Karan’s character but extend to the larger narrative, inviting readers to reflect on the moral and ethical dilemmas of modern society.

With its vivid descriptions and fast-paced narrative, The Rising of Dhanush reads like a blockbuster action film. On that, Dhawalraj says, “I really wanted to tell this story in an entertaining fast-paced way and make it feel like a potboiler.”

From high-stakes battles in Sun City to the mysterious jungles of Timira, Parmar’s storytelling immerses readers in a world that feels both fantastical and real. The climactic showdown at Roy Corp, where Karan and his team face off against the robotic menace of Sibu Roy, is a testament to Parmar’s flair for crafting gripping and visually evocative scenes.

The Rising of Dhanush marks a significant milestone in Indian fiction, blending mythology, superhero tropes, and social commentary into a compelling narrative. As Dhawalraj Parmar sets the stage for the next instalment in the series, readers can look forward to more adventures from Karan Keshav and his team.

As readers await the continuation of Karan’s journey, Parmar’s The Rising of Dhanush stands as a testament to the enduring power of stories that transcend time and tradition.
