The Legend of Chandi by Dhananjaya is your next must-read if you’re looking for a book that’s equal parts heart, guts, and tusk-sized charm! This isn’t your average animal story; rather, it’s a daring fusion of political corruption, eco-fiction, and human encroachment. This genre-bending tale transforms an elephant’s struggle into an epic environmental parable, symbolising resistance. It’s full of vivid descriptions and societal commentary. Imagine The Lion King, if simba was an one-tusk elephant and the hyenas were humans.

Earthy, colourful, and firmly rooted in Sri Lankan culture, Dhananjaya’s writing is also subversive, using fiction to rage at contemporary problems like wildlife exploitation and deforestation. Starring a hero with flappy ears, one tusk and a cause worth charging for, it’s a wacky genre concoction you never knew you needed. Life-altering, moving, and completely unforgettable!

    The Premise

Ever heard of a one-tusked elephant with a wild heart and a whole lot of spirit? Meet Chandi, the unforgettable star of The Legend of Chandi! Raised in the lush, leafy jungles of Sri Lanka by his wise and no-nonsense granny Rani, Chandi’s early days are all about mud baths, jungle wisdom, and learning the ropes of the wild life.

But paradise doesn’t last forever. As bulldozers flatten forests and ancient elephant trails vanish, Chandi’s leafy playground turns into a landmine of human chaos. Cue poachers with ivory dreams, farmers with firecrackers, and an entire herd under threat. After a banana farm raid goes horribly wrong, Chandi gets branded as public enemy number one.

Things spiral fast when he stumbles upon goda, a potent jungle brew, and becomes a tipsy target for traps and shady dealings. Toss in a tusker rivalry with the brawny Ratta and a villainous schemer named Wilfred (think poaching meets corporate greed), and Chandi’s got more drama than a jungle soap opera.

Enter Dr. Thomas, a kind-hearted English vet with a passion for pachyderms, and Lihini, a fearless educator out to save the world one elephant at a time. Together, they weave into Chandi’s story as Sri Lanka itself battles through civil war, economic collapse, and more.

At its heart, The Legend of Chandi is a roller coaster of emotions, wild, witty, heartbreaking, and hopeful. It’s a bold, beautiful meditation on nature, survival, and whether one brave elephant can flip the script on human greed.

    Meet The Storyteller

Dhananjaya Walallawita’s narrative is as complex and nuanced as his own experience. Dhananjaya, who was born and bred in Sri Lanka and currently resides with his family in the English countryside, finds great inspiration in his heritage. His poetry is deeply influenced by his cross-cultural life, which was molded by the peaceful rustle of the English countryside and the island rhythms of his early years.

Dhananjaya works as a marketing technology and operations specialist by day. He writes, studies and builds at night, when everyone else is asleep and there is silence. His mind is constantly urging him to manufacture, repair, develop, or become an expert at something new. Dhananjaya uses his creative energy to write fiction. Dhananjaya finds his most honest words and clearest thoughts during those peaceful hours when the land is alive with nighttime mystery.

    The Author’s Commentary

Not all stories start with a spark of imagination. Some begin with truth — raw, powerful, and heartbreaking.

Few years ago, I came across the story of Galgamuwa Chandi, a single-tusked elephant who had become both feared and revered in Sri Lanka. Branded a rogue notorious tusker – “Chandi”, he was blamed for raiding crops and damaging villages and was relocated few times only to break out and return to his usual home ground near Galgamuwa reservoir. His story is one of survival, loss of habitat, and a desperate attempt to coexist in a world increasingly unkind to his kind.

His tragic fate stayed with me. It made me question not just the human-elephant conflict. That became the seed for my second fiction novel — The Legend of Chandi — a fictional retelling inspired by his life, exploring the tusker’s journey through a lens of empathy, resistance, and resilience.

As a writer, this book pushed me in all the right ways. I truly believe I’ve levelled up in my storytelling—digging deeper into character, emotion, and the soul of the wild. It’s been a labour of love, growth, and countless late nights.

    Last Thoughts

As the releasing date comes close, Dhananjaya’s The Legend of Chandi is expected to be a notable contribution to modern eco-fiction, providing a novel and perceptive examination of environmental issues via a creative literary perspective.

Dhananjaya makes room for introspection, compassion, and a more comprehensive ecological perspective. Early previews suggest that The Legend of Chandi will be a book that is both a literary statement and a wake-up call, a work that is as intelligent as it is creative.
