Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], December 10: In an inspiring example of medical excellence, doctors at Sterling Hospital, Gurukul, Ahmedabad, have saved the life of a 15-year-old girl who was battling severe Plasmodium falciparum malaria and multiple organ failure. The teenager was rushed from Rajasthan to Sterling Hospital in an extremely critical condition, struggling to breathe and dependent on ventilator support. She was diagnosed with falciparum malaria that had caused acute kidney injury, lung damage, and multi-organ complications. Under the expert care of Dr Sonal Dalal and Dr Amrish Patel (Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist), the ICU team initiated rapid, advanced treatment, including dialysis and specialised critical care support. She remained on a ventilator for 12 days and showed steady improvement with round-the-clock monitoring.

Thanks to the collective efforts of the critical care team, the young patient made a remarkable recovery and was discharged after 18 days of intensive medical management. Sterling Hospital officials stated that the case highlights the importance of early diagnosis, timely referral, and access to advanced critical care in managing severe malaria cases

Sterling Hospital, Ahmedabad’s Dr Amrish Patel (Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist) explained that when the patient arrived, her oxygen levels were dangerously low, and she was struggling to breathe. She had been shifted from Rajasthan on ventilator support due to her fragile condition. The team immediately initiated specialised treatment to stabilise her. She was diagnosed with falciparum malaria, which had led to kidney damage, lung complications, and multi-organ involvement. After dialysis and medical management, she remained on ventilator support for 12 days, during which her life was saved through advanced care administered by the critical care team.

Dr. Amrish Patel (Pulmonologist & Critical Care Specialist) added that a bronchoscopy was performed to clear the secretions from her lungs. An essential step that further contributed to her recovery. As her condition improved, the ventilator support was gradually removed, and she was shifted to a normal room. By then, she had entered the recovery phase. After approximately 18 days of treatment, her life was saved through advanced care, and she was discharged in a stable and healthy condition.

Dr. Sonal Dalal said that Sterling Hospitals has successfully treated many high-risk patients over the years. She stated that the credit for this case goes to the coordinated efforts of the entire medical staff. Being a multispecialty hospital ensures that in any emergency, specialists are readily available. In this case as well, the girl’s life was saved through advanced care, supported by Sterling Hospitals’ clinical excellence, 24/7 medical support, advanced infrastructure, and exceptional teamwork.
