Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], February 27: A new campaign launched in Mumbai is taking aim at a major public health issue: open spitting. The Pratibimb Foundation and the Rotary Club of Mumbai Pioneers, in collaboration with SafeThoo, launched the initiative in Kalyan-Dombivali, the constituency of Hon’ble MP Dr. Shrikant Shinde, coinciding with his 38th birthday. The campaign seeks to raise awareness about the link between open spitting and the spread of tuberculosis (TB), aligning with the national ‘TB Mukt Bharat’ movement.

Volunteers are informing residents about the health risks associated with open spitting and its connection to TB transmission. A key component is the distribution of free biodegradable SafeThoo pouches, providing a responsible alternative for spit disposal.

“Education is the first step towards change,” says Mrs. Manisha Kondaskar of the Pratibimb Foundation. “By raising awareness, we aim to reduce TB infections and promote better hygiene practices.”

Rtn. Yash Shah, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Mumbai Pioneers, emphasizes the project’s significance. “Spitting-free streets are a small but significant step towards a TB-free India. We’re pleased to collaborate with SafeThoo, which offers a practical solution.”

Rtn. Nihar Shastri, Project Chairman & Director of Medical Services, present at the event expressed his gratitude, “The local government has been instrumental, helping us display informational posters on public transport, including auto-rickshaws, buses, and towing vans. Their support in distributing SafeThoo pouches and educating the public has been crucial.”

The fight against TB is particularly critical in India, which carries the world’s highest burden of the disease. According to the World Health Organization, India accounts for roughly a quarter of global TB cases. Public health initiatives like this Mumbai campaign, which address specific transmission risks and promote behavioural change, are essential to achieving the national goal of a TB-free India.

This campaign represents a localized effort with the potential for broader impact. By focusing on education and providing practical solutions, the Rotary Club of Mumbai Pioneers is contributing to the fight against TB and promoting a healthier future all year long.   Interested to collaborate connect with these on field changemakers, write to them on [email protected]
