New Delhi [India], February 21: A romance novel that brings a tangent of arranged marriages that are not talked about enough, “This Thing Called Love ” by Deblina Bhattacharyya, masterfully portrays the romanticized notion of arranged marriages, instead offering an unrealistic scenario that hides the real complexities involved.

Through the characters – Amaira Basu Mallik, a young Indian-Christian woman, and Deven Mukherjee, a Bengali man based in Paris, the author skillfully explores the diversity of cultural expectations, personal goals, and the human quest for love and connection. Through Amaira and Deven ‘ s journey, the author sheds light on the realities of arranged marriages, where individuals from different backgrounds and wavelengths come together.

The novel highlights the awkwardness, miscommunication, and lack of close bonding that often arises in arranged marriages, that makes them vulnerable to challenges.

“This Thing Called Love ” is a must-read for anyone seeking a thoughtful and engaging exploration of love, marriage, and relationships. It challenges the conventional narrative or portrayal surrounding arranged marriages. With its well-crafted characters, engaging storyline, and thought-provoking themes, this novel will resonate with readers who seek a realistic and relatable portrayal of love, connection and marriage. In the novel “This Thing Called Love ” , Deblina Bhattacharyya aims to convey the importance of friendship, family, and communication in making arranged marriages successful. By sharing Amaira and Deven ‘ s story, the author encourages readers to approach love and relationships with empathy, understanding, and an open mind. Our mainstream media and romance novels often portray arranged marriages through rose-tinted glasses, creating unrealistic expectations and false hope.

However, the reality is not even close. Marriages, both arranged and love, are like a fragile glass that needs care. It’ s time to move beyond the fairy tale and showcase the authentic experiences of those in arranged marriages. In reality, arranged marriages can be messy, imperfect, and awkward creating misunderstanding and miscommunications. They, like all relationships, require effort, commitment, and a willingness to understand and connect with each other. By showing the realities of arranged marriages, Deblina promotes a more realistic understanding and appreciation of this common practice in our country. Deblina Bhattacharyya, an English Literature student who ‘ s a passionate writer, an all time dreamer and a literary enthusiast from Kolkata.

Deblina marked her presence in the literary world when she self-published her debut collection of poetry, Knots, in 2019, followed by her second poetry book, My Black Rose, in 2021 (traditionally published by Mithaas Services). “This Thing Called Love ” is Deblina ‘ s debut work of fiction, where she weaves a tale of complicated family relationships and how destiny always ensures we get what we deserve.
