New Delhi [India], February 05: In a country where preventable blindness continues to affect millions, access to advanced and compassionate eye care remains a critical challenge—especially in tier-2 and semi-urban regions. Kiran Eye Care, based in Mancherial, Telangana, stands as a strong example of how world-class ophthalmology can be delivered locally with precision, technology, and empathy.

We spoke with Dr. Kiran Kumar Punnam, Founder and Consultant Vitreoretinal Surgeon of Kiran Eye Care, to understand his journey, mission, and the growing impact of the centre on regional eye health.

Q1. Please introduce yourself and Kiran Eye Care.

    Dr. Kiran Kumar Punnam:
I am an ophthalmologist with qualifications including MBBS, MS in Ophthalmology, and fellowships in Vitreo-Retina Surgery (FVRS) and Cataract & Refractive Surgery (FCRS).

Kiran Eye Care was established with a clear purpose—to bring comprehensive, advanced eye care to Mancherial and surrounding districts so patients do not need to travel to metro cities like Hyderabad. We are a full-service ophthalmic centre offering routine eye checkups, Micro-Incision Cataract Surgery (Phacoemulsification), LASIK and ICL procedures for myopia, Squint correction, advanced retina and vitreous care, and specialised pediatric ophthalmology, including Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screening and treatment.

Q2. What inspired you to establish a specialised eye care centre in Mancherial?

During my training, I noticed that patients from smaller towns often delayed treatment due to a lack of specialised facilities. Conditions like retinal diseases or pediatric eye disorders require timely intervention—delay can lead to permanent vision loss. Mancherial lacked tertiary-level ophthalmic services, and I felt a responsibility to bridge this gap by delivering metro-level expertise with community-level compassion.

Q3. What makes Kiran Eye Care different?

Our strength lies in sub-specialisation and empathy. We handle complex cases such as ROP in premature infants, pediatric retinal disorders, advanced cataracts, squint, myopia, and corneal conditions—services rarely available outside major cities.
Equally important is our community outreach. We conduct school and orphanage screening programs to detect eye infections, refractive errors, and developmental issues early. For us, eye care is both a medical service and a social responsibility.

Q4. An achievement you are most proud of?

Our Community Outreach Program for Underprivileged Children. Through regular screening camps, we have treated children with neglected vision problems. Restoring sight has dramatically improved their education and future opportunities. Preventing lifelong blindness in a child is deeply fulfilling.

Q5. Who are your primary patients?

We serve all age groups—elderly patients undergoing cataract surgery, students seeking myopia correction, premature infants needing ROP screening, and underserved communities receiving early diagnosis through outreach initiatives. Our goal is lifelong eye care, not one-time treatment.

    Q6. Recent technology upgrades?

We’ve strengthened early diagnostic protocols for childhood eye disorders, expanded school screening programs to address digital eye strain, and upgraded surgical infrastructure with premium intraocular lenses for better visual outcomes and faster recovery.

    Q7. Key milestones?

Establishing tertiary-level retinal and corneal services in Mancherial, community recognition for free surgical camps, and consistently high success rates across cataract, refractive, and retinal surgeries. Community trust is our greatest achievement.

    Q8. Future plans?

We are expanding our Myopia Vision Safety Project, focusing on school children. We also continue adopting minimally invasive surgical techniques to improve patient comfort and outcomes.

Q9. Your message on eye health?

Most vision loss is preventable with early detection. Regular eye checkups—especially for children, the elderly, and premature infants—are essential. At Kiran Eye Care, our mission is to eliminate preventable blindness by making expert eye care accessible to all.
