Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], August 9:  In a remarkable display of medical expertise and innovation, Narayana Hospital, Ahmedabad, has successfully performed a life-saving Balloon Coarctoplasty on an 8-day-old baby boy. The newborn was admitted with severe symptoms of rapid breathing and an antenatal diagnosis of a heart condition, necessitating immediate medical intervention.

Dr. Divyesh Sadadiwala, Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist at Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad, conducted a detailed echocardiogram and identified the problem as Coarctation of the Aorta—a critical narrowing of the major vessel responsible for transporting oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Recognizing the urgency, Dr. Sadadiwala and his team swiftly moved to perform the Balloon Coarctoplasty (Angioplasty) procedure.

Balloon Coarctoplasty, also known as Angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to widen the narrowed section of the aorta. The procedure involves inserting a thin, flexible tube called a catheter through a blood vessel in the groin. This catheter is carefully guided to the site of the narrowing in the aorta. Once in position, a small balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated. The balloon stretches the narrowed part of the aorta, improving blood flow. After the aorta is sufficiently widened, the balloon is deflated and the catheter is removed.

“The challenge with such a young patient is administering anesthesia without causing complications that might necessitate ventilator support,” explained Dr. Hetal Shah:- Sr. Consultant Cardiac Anesthetics. “We adopted a new method of delivering a precisely measured dose of anesthetic agents. This innovative approach ensured the baby remained asleep yet breathed normally throughout the procedure, which significantly aided in a rapid recovery.”

Thanks to this advanced technique, the baby boy avoided the use of a ventilator and began recovering almost immediately after the procedure. He was then shifted to the hospital’s care with oxygen support for continued monitoring and management.

The timely and expert intervention by Dr. Sadadiwala and the dedicated team at Narayana Hospital, Ahmedabad, was crucial in saving the baby’s life. “If not treated promptly, the condition could have been fatal within a day or two,” emphasized Dr. Sadadiwala.

This case exemplifies the hospital’s commitment to providing innovative and compassionate care. The success of this procedure brings hope to many families facing similar challenges.

Dr. Divyesh Sadadiwala, Consultant Pediatric Cardiologist at Narayana Hospital Ahmedabad, shares “We are deeply committed to providing the best possible care for our young patients. This case was particularly challenging due to the patient’s age and the complexity of the condition. However, our team’s expertise and the use of cutting-edge techniques allowed us to perform the procedure successfully and save this baby’s life. We are grateful to see the positive outcome and are motivated to continue our efforts in delivering exceptional pediatric cardiac care.”
