Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], April 23: The Micron STEM Lab at Science City in Ahmedabad is a public-private partnership between Gujarat Council of Science City (GCSC), the Ahmedabad Police, Micron and Mantra4Change. The lab space at Science City (one of the largest science museums in India) provides access and instruction for students to get hands-on learning of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

On October 17, 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Gujarat Council of Science City (GCSC) and Micron Semiconductor Technology India (MSTI) Gujarat. This collaboration aims to foster creativity and innovation among Government school students by exposing them to STEM tinkering activities and design thinking methodologies. The initiative will enhance educational opportunities and the broader development of technical talent in Government schools in India. Additionally, it seeks to improve scientific literacy and problem-solving skills by enabling students to apply their learning to real-world challenges. By providing opportunities to interact with experts and mentors at the Ahmedabad Science City, the project will inspire students to pursue careers in STEM fields. Furthermore, teachers will receive training on using hands-on activities to teach Science and Math in their classrooms.

Against this background, the Micron STEM Lab was established in December 2024. Since then, over 3,100 underrepresented students (from the Student Police Cadet program) from 43 schools and 1200 teachers from 50 schools have been engaged.

As part of this public-private collaboration, the “Micron STEM Spark Exhibition” competition was organized for school students who have participated in experiential STEM learning at the Micron STEM Lab as a capstone opportunity to present the various projects they have worked on to show how they have cultivated their scientific mindset and ignited their interest in innovation.

During the program, students shared their scientific models and projects, showcasing different aspects of STEM. This exhibition served as a unique platform for students to demonstrate their imagination and technical skills in front of audience members from GCSC, Ahmedabad Police and the Micron Foundation.

All the students who have been receiving STEM education and hands-on experiential learning at the GCSC Micron STEM Lab were eligible to participate in this competition. Out of these students, over 70 of them presented more than 23 scientific models, with the top three entries being awarded first, second, and third place trophies, medals and certificates. Following the prize distribution, the guests toured the exhibition, appreciating the students’ inventions and hard work.

The exhibition featured inspiring addresses by Shri Sudhir Patel, Executive Director, Gujarat Council of Science City; Shri Safin Hasan, Indian Police Services (IPS), Nodal Officer Student Police Cadet (SPC) program, Deputy Commissioner of Police; Ms Moira Dawa, Program Manager, Micron’s India Social Impact and Community Engagement Lead, and Dr. Vrajesh Parikh, General Manager, Science Promotion, GCSC. Their words motivated the young minds and highlighted the importance of fostering scientific curiosity.

The “STEM Spark Exhibition” has proved to be a source of inspiration for budding young scientists in Gujarat. GCSC and Micron Foundation plan to evaluate the long-term impact of STEM Lab engagement on student interest, creativity, confidence and teacher ability to use practical tools and engaging methodologies that bring science to life in their classrooms. Meanwhile, the Science City and Micron Foundation’s initiative will continue to create new opportunities that helps students increase their awareness of STEM concepts and AI literacy through experiential learning.
