Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], November 12: Hirschsprung’s disease is a rare condition in children that is not widely known to the public and, as a result, can often be difficult for patients and caregivers to identify. Despite it being rare, it affects approximately 1 in 5,000 children. To address this, Dr. Kant Shah has taken the initiative and released a new video in his Surgical Sense series. In this video, he provides a detailed explanation of Hirschsprung’s disease, including its causes, symptoms, and treatment options.

Hirschsprung’s disease is caused by the absence of nerve cells in parts of the colon, leading to severe constipation and bowel obstruction. It’s a genetic condition where surgical interventions are necessary to manage it. It can be identified when infants have difficulty passing meconium within the first 48 hours of life and abdominal distension. Males are five times more prone to suffer from Hirschsprung’s Disease than females.

“Hirschsprung’s disease is a serious condition, but early diagnosis and surgical intervention can help the child lead a normal life. The video aims to educate medical assistance, parents and the public, where we break down the scientific complexities into simple words for the public,” says Dr Kant.

With ‘Surgical Sense’, a new YouTube Series started by Dr Kant Shah, he aims to provide a credible and reliable source of information to first-time parents and individuals who otherwise would have to do a lot of research to understand basic and complex paediatric diagnosis and treatment plan. The second episode on Hirschsprung’s disease is now available on his YouTube channel as a part of the ongoing ‘Surgical Sense’ series.
