Faridabad (Haryana) [India], February 06: The Ethiopian pavilion has emerged as one of the major attractions at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela 2026 (39th edition), drawing large crowds of visitors eager to explore the country’s vibrant artistic traditions and cultural heritage. A 20-member Ethiopian cultural and artisan delegation is showcasing a wide range of handcrafted products, including intricately designed coasters, traditional motif T-shirts, decorative artefacts, and other unique handicrafts, which have received an enthusiastic response from both domestic and international visitors.
The globally renowned fair, being held from January 31 to February 15, features nearly 1,200 stalls and artisans from over 50 countries, each presenting their indigenous crafts and cultural expressions. Among them, Ethiopian artisans have captured special attention for their fine craftsmanship, distinctive design patterns, and vibrant traditional colours. The pavilion has witnessed steady footfall throughout the day, with visitors showing keen interest in learning about Ethiopian art and purchasing authentic handcrafted products.
One of the highlights of the fair has been the participation of young artists from Ethiopia, Botswana, and Senegal, particularly members of Gen-Z, who have shown deep admiration for Indian culture. These artists have entertained audiences by performing fusion and traditional dance routines set to popular Indian songs, creating an engaging cross-cultural experience. Several foreign artists have also displayed interest in the Hindi language, reflecting India’s expanding cultural influence on the global stage.
The Ethiopian delegation is not limited to handicraft displays but is also presenting rhythmic traditional dance, folk music, and cultural performances that showcase Ethiopia’s ancient civilization, rich traditions, and dynamic creative legacy. These performances have contributed significantly to strengthening cultural dialogue and mutual understanding between India and African nations.
India’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Anil Kumar Rai, praised Ethiopia’s participation in the Surajkund Mela and highlighted its importance in fostering bilateral relations. He said, “The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is acting as a cultural bridge between India and Ethiopia. The participation of Ethiopian artists and artisans strengthens the historical connections and shared cultural heritage between the two countries. Such cultural platforms enhance people-to-people engagement and provide fresh momentum to bilateral ties.”
Experts believe that India and Ethiopia have witnessed renewed cultural and diplomatic engagement in recent years.
