New Delhi [India], January 20: In the busy classrooms of VIT Vellore, 19-year-old Samanyu Singh looks like any other hardworking Computer Science student. But when the sun sets and he picks up his guitar, he becomes the frontman of Chana Masala, an Indo-Western fusion band that is currently the talk of the national college circuit. Samanyu isn’t just “managing” his hobbies and studies; he is winning at both, maintaining a stellar 9.0 CGPA while rewriting the script for young Indian achievers.

    A Legacy of Royal Performances

Samanyu’s journey with the spotlight began long before his college days. His talent has twice earned him a place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. In 2019, he gave two solo performances in front of the then-Honorable President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, on the occasion of the Rashtrapati Bhavan Foundation Day. This streak of excellence continued into 2023, when he performed for the Honorable President Smt. Droupadi Murmu.

Before his university success, Samanyu was already a recognized name in the Delhi NCR circuit. He was a winner at the Razzmatazz inter-school music competition and a finalist in Crescendo, a prestigious inter-state music competition, proving his mettle early on. His soulful voice and technical skill have even caught the attention of legendary icons; he has been appreciated by the likes of AR Rahman, Sonu Nigam, and Bollywood star Sidharth Malhotra.

    Conquering Asia’s Biggest Stage

The year 2025 has been a whirlwind of victories for Samanyu and his band, Chana Masala. The group recently made history at Mood Indigo, IIT Bombay’s legendary cultural festival. Competing against over 300 bands from across the continent in the Mantra Battle of Bands, they clinched the first-place trophy at what is widely considered Asia’s biggest cultural fest. It was a monumental win-the first time in 30 years that a band from his university had secured the top prize at this venue.

This national triumph followed a string of regional successes, including a first-place finish at NIT Trichy’s Tarangini and a finalist spot at VIT’s own Riviera. Their winning sound is fueled by original tracks like Prelude in Abheri, a complex mix of Indian classical and rock music.
