New Delhi [India], March 25: Dr. Spandana Pasam’s journey is one of resilience, passion, and dedication. Born and raised in the USA, she always had a deep curiosity about the human mind and a strong desire to help people navigate their emotional struggles. While many of her peers pursued medicine in the States, she chose a different path—one that would take her to India, a country with a rapidly evolving mental health landscape yet still grappling with deep-rooted stigma.

    A Unique Path in Medicine

Choosing to study medicine in India was not an easy decision. Leaving behind the familiarity of her home country, Dr. Spandana immersed herself in an entirely different culture and healthcare system. The experience, however, proved invaluable. It gave her first-hand exposure to diverse psychiatric cases, many of which were influenced by deep-seated societal norms and generational trauma. She realized that mental health in India was not just about individual struggles but also about the collective experiences of families, traditions, and societal expectations.

After completing her medical degree in India, she knew she wanted to refine her expertise further. She pursued advanced training at Harvard, one of the world’s most prestigious institutions, where she was exposed to cutting-edge research, groundbreaking treatments, and some of the best minds in psychiatry. Her thirst for knowledge didn’t stop there—she went on to study at the Royal College of Psychiatry, where she deepened her understanding of psychiatric disorders and innovative treatments.

Returning to India: A Mission to Break Mental Health Stigma

Despite the numerous opportunities available to her abroad, Dr. Spandana always felt a pull toward India. She knew that while mental health awareness was slowly growing, stigma and misinformation still prevented many from seeking help. She wanted to change that. Instead of staying in the West, where mental health services were more advanced and widely accepted, she made the bold decision to return to Hyderabad and establish her practice.

Her return was met with both excitement and challenges. While some appreciated her expertise and international training, others were skeptical about modern psychiatric treatments, especially those involving newer technologies. However, Dr. Spandana was determined to introduce innovative approaches to mental health care in India.

    Pioneering rTMS in Indian Psychiatry

One of the groundbreaking treatments she brought to prominence in India was Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS)—a non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. rTMS has been highly effective in treating depression, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders, particularly in cases where medication has failed.

Although rTMS was widely used in Western countries, it was still relatively unknown in India. Dr. Spandana dedicated herself to not only implementing this treatment in her practice but also educating fellow psychiatrists and patients about its benefits. Her commitment to research and innovation led her to publish three international articles on rTMS, further cementing her reputation as a leader in the field.

    Specializing in Toxic Relationships

While treating patients, Dr. Spandana noticed a recurring theme—many of their mental health struggles stemmed from toxic relationships. Whether it was emotional abuse from a partner, manipulation from family members, or deep-seated trauma from past experiences, these relationships had a profound impact on their well-being.

Having faced her own battles with toxic relationships, she deeply empathized with her patients. She understood the patterns, the emotional turmoil, and the difficulty of breaking free. This personal connection fueled her mission to specialize in this area, providing patients with the tools and insights they needed to recognize toxic dynamics and reclaim their mental health.

She developed therapeutic techniques tailored to individuals trapped in unhealthy relationships, helping them build self-awareness, establish boundaries, and ultimately heal. Her work in this area gained significant attention, making her one of Hyderabad’s most sought-after psychiatrists for relationship-related mental health issues.

A Voice for Change: Writing Rising from the Shadows

Beyond her clinical practice, Dr. Spandana wanted to reach a larger audience and break the silence around toxic relationships. She realized that many people suffering from emotional abuse didn’t even recognize they were in toxic situations. To address this, she decided to write a book—Rising from the Shadows—a powerful guide to identifying, escaping, and healing from toxic relationships.

The book delves into real-life case studies, psychological insights, and practical strategies for breaking free from harmful relationship patterns. Through her writing, she aims to empower individuals to take control of their mental health, understand the red flags of toxicity, and build healthier relationships.

Changing the Face of Psychiatry in India

Today, Dr. Spandana Pasam is recognized as one of Hyderabad’s leading psychiatrists, known for her innovative approach, deep empathy, and relentless drive to challenge mental health stigma. Her work has not only transformed the lives of countless patients but has also played a crucial role in reshaping how mental health is perceived in India.

Through her pioneering use of rTMS, her specialization in toxic relationships, and her advocacy for mental health awareness, she continues to inspire change in a society where mental well-being is often overlooked. As she prepares to launch Rising from the Shadows, she hopes to further her impact, guiding more people toward healing and self-discovery.

Her journey—from a young medical student in India to an internationally trained psychiatrist and now a leading mental health advocate in Hyderabad—is a testament to the power of perseverance, compassion, and the unwavering belief that change is possible.
