Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], December 30: Dr Munna Lal Devdas, a distinguished educationist, author, cultural historian, and social reformer from Chhattisgarh, stands as a powerful example of grassroots nation-building in India. Emerging from the historically significant village of Koundkera (Kopra)—closely associated with the freedom movement—he has devoted his entire life to education, culture, patriotism, and social consciousness. In recognition of his multidimensional contributions, he is respectfully known as “Chhattisgarh’s First 36-Gadhiya.”
Dr. Devdas rendered 36 years of dedicated service (1987–2023) as a teacher, headmaster, and cluster coordinator, giving a new direction to rural education. He placed discipline, creativity, and value-based learning at the core of the school system. Under his leadership, schools became not merely centres of academic instruction but institutions for character building, cultural pride, and civic responsibility. Inspired and mentored by him, 51 students and several teachers received the Governor’s Award, reflecting his deep commitment to personal mentorship and educational excellence.
His outstanding contribution to education received national recognition in 2007, when he was honored with the National Teacher Award by the President of India. The award was presented by the then President Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, placing him among the country’s most respected educators.
Beyond education, Dr. Devdas has made significant contributions to literature and cultural preservation. He has authored more than 25 inspirational and cultural books and produced numerous research articles documenting Chhattisgarh’s folk traditions, social values, and cultural consciousness. His work represents a vital effort to transform oral traditions into documented history.
One of his most remarkable achievements is the documentation of the 75-year-old Prabhat Bhajan tradition, which began in 1942 and remains a living cultural legacy inspired by the freedom movement. This historic contribution earned national and international record recognition, establishing Dr. Devdas as a prominent cultural custodian.
Dr Devdas firmly believes that patriotism should not be limited to ceremonial occasions but should be practised in everyday life. Guided by this philosophy, he documented and promoted the daily National Anthem tradition in Shyam Nagar village of Gariaband district. This initiative earned a place in The Ideal Indian Book of Records and emerged as a nationally admired model.
His contribution to music and creative arts is equally noteworthy. His compositions, deeply rooted in patriotism and Chhattisgarhi culture, have been rendered by renowned artists such as Anup Jalota, Anuradha Paudwal, and Suresh Wadkar, bringing his cultural vision to national and international platforms.
Dr. Devdas is the founder of the Rajiv Lochan District Manas Sangh, through which he has strengthened spiritual, cultural, and social awareness. Under his leadership, a 255-kilometre Pari River Parikrama was successfully organised in June 2025, beautifully integrating spirituality, environmental awareness, and social unity.
In the field of social reform, he led peaceful movements against animal sacrifice and initiatives such as the Pitru Manas Mahotsav, promoting compassion, ethical values, and cultural balance. Through dialogue and inclusiveness, he has consistently worked to unite communities.
Honored with more than 100 awards, recognitions, and record certifications, Dr. Munna Lal Devdas’s legacy extends far beyond accolades. His true identity lives on in the countless lives he has shaped through education, culture, and human values. His life stands as a living testament to the truth that genuine nation-building begins at the grassroots level.
