Surat (Gujarat) [India], March 10: To honor the 78th death anniversary of National Poet Zaverchand Meghani, a grand commemorative event has been organized at Shauryabhumi in Dhandhuka. The event, meticulously planned by Pinaki Meghani, grandson of Zaverchand Meghani and founder of the Zaverchand Meghani Smriti Sansthan, aims to inspire the younger generation with India’s rich cultural, literary, and musical heritage.

This significant initiative is supported by Gujarat Tourism Corporation Ltd., under the Zaverchand Meghani Circuit project, which focuses on preserving and developing key sites associated with Meghani’s life into living heritage spaces.

    Key Highlights of the Event

    1. Inauguration of Gujarat’s First Poetry-Themed Park – ‘Charan-Kanya’ Vatika (The Tales of Gir)

One of the major attractions of this event is the grand inauguration of Gujarat’s first-ever poetry-inspired theme park, Charan-Kanya Vatika (The Tales of Gir), based on Meghani’s iconic 1928 poem “Charan-Kanya”.

Conceptualized by Pinaki Meghani and developed by Gujarat Tourism Corporation Ltd., this unique and inspiring project celebrates the essence of women empowerment through poetry.

The park features over 30 life-size sculptures, created by renowned sculptors Mayur Vakani, Anand Tike, and Hemali Vakani (Amit Fiber Décor). These sculptures vividly depict:

    • National Poet Zaverchand Meghani
    • Charan poet Dula Bhaya Kag
    • The 14-year-old Charan-Kanya and her parents
    • A lion family and Gir cows
    • The vibrant wildlife of Gir Forest

The inauguration holds special significance as it precedes International Women’s Day (March 8, 2025), further amplifying its message of women’s empowerment.

Additionally, the Gujarat Forest Department will conduct a tree plantation drive titled ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’, symbolizing environmental consciousness and sustainability.

    2. Unveiling of Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue

For the first time in this region, a beautifully crafted statue of Mahatma Gandhi will be unveiled, marking a significant milestone in Gujarat’s cultural heritage.

    3. ‘Meghani Vandana’ (Kasumbal Lok Dayro) – A Grand Folk Music Tribute

A special folk music event, ‘Meghani Vandana’ (Kasumbal Lok Dayro), will bring to life Meghani’s timeless compositions and curated folk ballads. The event will feature performances by renowned Gujarati folk artists:

    • Abhesinh Rathod
    • Dhirubhai Sarvaiya
    • Radhaben Vyas
    • Pankaj Bhatt

In addition, the event will feature a special appearance by actor Mayur Vakani, popularly known for his role as Sundarlal in the television series “Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah”.

This grand musical tribute is financially supported by the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Academy, under the Department of Sports, Youth, and Cultural Activities, Government of Gujarat.

    Live Broadcast & Digital Presence

The event will be live-streamed on www.eevents.tv/meghani, allowing Meghani’s admirers from around the world to witness this historic celebration.

    Tribute from Gujarat’s Leadership

In a heartfelt letter to Pinaki Meghani, Hon. Chief Minister of Gujarat, Bhupendra Patel, expressed deep admiration for Meghani’s contributions to literature, folk culture, journalism, and India’s freedom struggle. He remarked:

“Zaverchand Meghani, a literary genius, has left an everlasting impact on the hearts of millions across India. His poetry embodies the pride, valor, and resilience of Gujarat, echoing the roars of lions and the indomitable spirit of our land. The effort to develop Meghani’s memorial sites into vibrant cultural spaces is truly commendable.”

Expressing his gratitude, Pinaki Meghani extended his heartfelt appreciation to Hon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, CM Bhupendra Patel, Minister Mulu Bera, and the Government of Gujarat for their unwavering support in preserving and promoting Meghani’s legacy.

A Historic Connection – Meghani’s Role in India’s Freedom Struggle

On April 28, 1930, during the Indian independence movement, Zaverchand Meghani was presented before a special British court at Dhandhuka’s then-existing Dak Bungalow (now the District Panchayat Rest House) on false charges of sedition.

Instead of defending himself, Meghani fearlessly recited a powerful patriotic poem from his anthology “Sindhudo”, titled “Chhelli Prarthna” (The Last Prayer). The poem moved the thousands present—including the presiding British magistrate Ishani—to tears.

As a result, Meghani was sentenced to two years of imprisonment in Sabarmati Jail for his passionate advocacy of Indian independence. This event remains a unique and historic moment in India’s freedom struggle, showcasing the power of poetry as a revolutionary force.

I dwell in the in-betweens—never sure, never boisterous. Hesitant and obstinate, I see what I'm doing through to completion in ways that never map it out. As a writer, I embrace the grey and the neglected. Nature grounds me, words define me, and I've made peace with being slightly out of step.
