New Delhi [India], January 5: Following the strong audience response to Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari, Indrani Mukerjea is set to continue her engagement with Rabindranath Tagore’s work through Nayika Bhoomika, a new dance drama produced under the banner of Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise (IME). The production will premiere on January 9 at St. Andrew’s Auditorium, Mumbai.
Nayika Bhoomika brings together four of Tagore’s short stories, interpreted through movement and live music. Conceived as a distinct theatrical offering, this production marks the next chapter in IME’s ongoing exploration of Tagore’s literary legacy, following three Mumbai showcases of Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari within a six-month period.
At the centre of the production is Mukerjea, who continues her dual role as performer and producer. Speaking about the project, she said, “Tagore’s women are never symbolic figures. They are thinking, questioning individuals. With Nayika Bhoomika, we wanted to bring together four such voices and allow each story the space to be experienced on its own terms, while still forming a cohesive evening of theatre.”
The cast features Mukerjea, Maninee De, Aakriti Sharma, Madhumita Chakraborty and Subrat Panda. Panda, who joined IME during the recent run of Chitrangada – Ek Sashakt Naari, continues his association with the production house as part of its focus on nurturing emerging talent in the performing arts.
Directed by Madhumita and Tony Chakraborty, Nayika Bhoomika is a dance drama that prioritises textual clarity while allowing movement and music to carry emotional transitions. The production features original music by Shantanu Bhattacharya, whose compositions form a connective thread across the four narratives.
Mukerjea noted that with Nayuka Bhoomika, the intent is to let each story stand on its own while remaining part of a unified theatrical experience. She added that the creative process behind the dance drama focuses on retaining the emotional core of Tagore’s writing without embellishment or reinterpretation that would distance the work from its literary origins.
With the upcoming premiere of Nayika Bhoomika, Indrani Mukerjea Enterprise continues to build a repertoire centred on classical literature adapted for the contemporary stage. The production also signals IME’s larger creative direction, which includes further work based on Tagore’s writings following its Mumbai premiere.
