Vadodara (Gujarat) [India], November 27: In a recent development, Bhailal Amin Cancer Centre has established a milestone in the management of primary peritoneal serous carcinoma (PPSC), a rare, aggressive malignancy with a median survival of just 2.5-9 months. The patient was a 29-year-old female, a resident of Dahod, Gujarat, who was brought to the hospital with gross abdominal distention only a few weeks after giving birth to twins through an LSCS procedure.

Preliminary examination showed that there was a large abdominal lump and a lot of fluid in the abdomen. PET- CT scan revealed a large tumour of 10 x 16 x 10 cm compressing against vital organs in the abdomen with evidence of metastasis to other regions of the abdomen. It was diagnosed as high-grade serous carcinoma by biopsy, and advanced disease was likely based on imaging and blood reports (tumor marker CA 125).

After careful observation and consultation, the patient underwent four cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy and was then taken for a major cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC – A specialised two-step procedure performed to treat advanced abdominal cancers, especially cases that have spread to the peritoneal lining. Dr Devang Patel and Dr Animesh Raj, Surgical Oncologists at Bhailal Amin Cancer Centre, performed this complex surgery. In this case, the visible cancer deposits in the abdomen were meticulously resected in toto, and then the circulation of the heated chemotherapy in the abdominal cavity was done to eliminate any microscopic cancer cells.

Following a nearly 10-hour surgery, the patient experienced a painless and uneventful recovery under the post-operative care of Dr Pranav Patel, Onco Critical Care Intensivist at Bhailal Amin Cancer Centre. The patient was successfully discharged on Post-Operative Day 7.

Dr Devang Patel, Surgical Oncologist at Bhailal Amin Cancer Centre, “This case demonstrates what multidisciplinary oncology can achieve even in the face of sporadic and advanced cancers. The patient was treated by a multidisciplinary team that opted for treatment using four cycles of chemotherapy, which assisted in reducing the size of the tumor, and it was safer to go for surgery. Achieving complete cytoreduction in PPSC is challenging, and we are proud to offer this level of advanced care to our cancer patients.”

Dr Animesh Raj, Surgical Oncologist at Bhailal Amin Cancer Centre, added, “HIPEC combined with complex cytoreductive surgery in selected patients offer a meaningful chance at long-term survival. We were in a position to obtain a CC-0 clearance, which indicates that no visible cancer remained. This outcome reflects the expertise and coordinated efforts of our entire team in fighting against cancer.

Bhailal Amin Cancer Centre continues to advance the standards of oncological care, delivering cutting-edge therapies and comprehensive support for patients battling rare and aggressive malignancies.
