Odisha (Bhubaneswar ) [India], July 18: July 15th, 2025 – Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest producer of aluminium, has installed 96 solar-powered streetlights across 21 villages in the Kalahandi and Rayagada districts of Odisha. The streetlights serve as the sole source of illumination in previously unlit areas within the community. This green initiative will provide reliable, energy-efficient lighting to over 5,000 residents while contributing to the reduction of approximately 22 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent emissions annually.

This is part of an initiative to install 150 solar-powered streetlights in the region targeting key locations such as marketplaces, village entrances, bus stands, community centres, schools, and main roads. The intervention is set to improve the overall quality of life for local communities by improving nighttime visibility and creating safer and more accessible public spaces after dark.

Besides aligning with Vedanta Aluminium’s broader mission to augment rural infrastructure and uplift communities in its operational areas, it also reinforces the company’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 7 (Affordable & Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities & Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).

Rajiv Kumar, CEO, Vedanta Aluminium, said, “At Vedanta Aluminium, our community development programs are tailored to the specific needs of the regions we serve. The solar lighting project in Kalahandi and Rayagada is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and inclusive growth. It is heartening to witness the positive impact these installations are already making in enhancing safety, improving mobility and strengthening community wellbeing. By integrating green infrastructure into rural areas, we strive to build a brighter, safer, and more sustainable future.”

Jagannath Naik Nayab, Sarpanch, Sunger Gram Panchayat – Kashipur Block, said, “Vedanta’s solar-lighting initiative has not only brightened our villages but also made them safer for everyone. We now have access to a reliable source of power supply. Everyone in the village truly appreciates the company’s efforts in addressing the needs of our community.”

Vedanta Aluminium remains committed to driving transformation in Odisha through strategic initiatives spanning education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, rural infrastructure, and grassroots sports and culture. Collaborating closely with local authorities and community stakeholders, the company ensures its interventions lead to tangible socio-economic progress.

Vedanta Aluminium, a business of Vedanta Limited, is India’s largest producer of aluminium, manufacturing more than half of India’s aluminium i.e., 2.42 million tonnes in FY25. It is a leader in value-added aluminium products that find critical applications in core industries.
