New Delhi [India], May 1: Constipation is often dismissed as a minor inconvenience, but medical experts caution against underestimating its impact. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), passing stools fewer than three times a week qualifies as constipation. Left unaddressed, it can progress into more serious conditions such as piles (hemorrhoids) and anal fissures, causing chronic pain and significant discomfort.

The Hidden Connection Between Constipation, Piles, and Fissures

Dr. Harish Verma, a renowned Ayurvedic specialist and head of the Canadian College of Ayurveda and Yoga, explains that repeated straining during bowel movements places excessive pressure on the veins in the anal region. Over time, this strain can cause the veins to swell, leading to the development of piles or fissures.

“Piles typically present as painful, swollen lumps around the anus and may be accompanied by bleeding during defecation,” says Dr. Verma. “Anal fissures, on the other hand, are small tears in the lining of the anus, causing sharp, burning pain and discomfort.”

Women, particularly during pregnancy, are at higher risk due to the increased pressure from the growing uterus. However, Dr. Verma warns that rectal bleeding isn’t always linked to piles—it can also be a symptom of more serious conditions, such as ulcerative colitis or colon cancer. Timely diagnosis is essential.

    Natural Ayurvedic Remedies for Constipation

To relieve constipation effectively, Dr. Verma recommends a fibre-rich diet that includes green leafy vegetables and fresh salads. One simple home remedy involves soaking dried figs overnight and consuming them in the morning with water to stimulate regular bowel movements. Additionally, two tablespoons of psyllium husk (Isabgol) mixed with water before dinner can support healthy digestion.

    Easing Pain and Discomfort

For individuals experiencing pain or burning sensations after bowel movements, Dr. Verma advises a sitz bath—soaking in warm water for 15 to 20 minutes—to help soothe the affected area. Based on traditional Ayurvedic texts, he has formulated a proprietary herbal blend that includes Rasaunt, Jimikand, and Arishtak. This natural combination has shown promising results in relieving the symptoms of piles and anal fissures.

    Lifestyle and Dietary Guidelines

Patients suffering from piles are encouraged to adopt a simple, easily digestible diet. Spicy foods, red meat, eggs, fish, and alcohol should be strictly avoided during episodes of pain or burning. Gentle physical activity—such as walking or yoga—is beneficial, while prolonged sitting, heavy lifting, and straining during bowel movements should be strictly avoided.

    Free Consultation Helpline

To assist patients in managing these conditions, Dr. Verma and his team have launched a dedicated helpline. Individuals can call +91 9910672020 for free consultations and personalized Ayurvedic guidance.

The Ayurvedic Approach to Holistic Health

As global interest in holistic and natural healing continues to rise, Ayurveda’s timeless principles are finding renewed relevance. “By addressing the root causes early, such as chronic constipation, we can prevent more serious complications and significantly improve quality of life,” concludes Dr. Verma.
