Making Ice Smart- Harsha Yadalam’s Journey from Entrepreneur to Innovation

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], December 09: When Harsha Yadalam started his entrepreneurial journey in 2008 with Flawless Performance, he had no idea that fifteen years later, he would be revolutionising how Indian households make ice. His journey from running a small business to heading multiple ventures taught him one crucial lesson: the best business ideas often come from solving everyday problems.

“I remember the countless times at home gatherings where we’d be hitting bags of ice against kitchen counters to break them apart,” Harsha recalls with a smile. “It was always the same story – one big frozen lump, often questionable hygiene, and always a compromise on quality.”

This common frustration led him to spend two years developing Kilig’s range of ice makers, launched in 2023. The machines stand out for their practicality – they’re truly portable with built-in water tanks, require no special installation, and can make fresh ice in minutes. “We wanted to make something that just works,” says Harsha. “Plug it in, add water, and you have fresh ice within minutes.”

The product line includes three distinct types of ice makers, each serving different needs. The bullet ice maker is perfect for families wanting quick-chilling ice for soft drinks and juices. For those who enjoy premium spirits, there’s a clear ice maker that produces slower-melting cubes. The crown jewel is the nugget ice maker, producing small, chewable pieces that absorb flavours – ideal for cocktails, cold coffees, and smoothies.

What makes these machines particularly suited for Indian homes is their thoughtful engineering. “We knew power consumption would be a concern,” Harsha explains. “Our modelsuse just 100-120 watts – about the same as an incandescent light bulb.” The machines can run on UPS during power cuts, and all melted ice is recycled back into the system, making them both energy and water efficient.

Headquartered in Bangalore, Kilig has already established itself across India’s major cities. The products are available on major e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Tata Cliq, with a successful pilot running on Blinkit in select cities.

“When you’ve been in business as long as I have, you learn that success comes from solving real problems,” says Harsha. Each machine features specific innovations – from the ability to mount mineral water bottles directly on some models (a feature cafes particularly love) to fail-safe protections against power fluctuations.

As the company looks towards global expansion next year, the focus remains on innovation and practical solutions. New models are in development, and there are plans to enter different categories. With Kilig, Harsha isn’t just selling appliances – he’s bringing a small but meaningful change to Indian homes, combining his years of business experience with a solution to an everyday problem.

“The best part?” Harsha adds, “No more wrestling with ice bags or compromising on quality. Just fresh, hygienic ice whenever you need it.” It’s this simple focus on solving real problems that has helped Kilig find its place in Indian homes, one ice cube at a time.
