New Delhi [India] October 15: Cancer cases could rise to over 35 million by 2050, a 77% increase largely driven by population growth, aging, and increasing exposure to risk factors such as tobacco use and unhealthy diets. Cancer accounts for about 1 in every 6 deaths globally, with a particularly severe impact on low- and middle-income countries where healthcare resources are often limited.

In India, the situation mirrors global trends with an alarming increase in cancer cases. As of early 2024, the number of cancer cases in India was estimated at approximately 1.5 million in 2023, up from 1.46 million in 2022, with projections by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) indicating a rise to around 1.57 million by 2025. Among women, breast cancer is the most prevalent, followed by cervical and ovarian cancers, while in men, lung cancer, mouth cancer, and prostate cancer lead the statistics. These figures underline the urgent need for innovative and accessible cancer care solutions. M | O | C Cancer Care & Research Centre with its decentralized model of community cancer treatment centres have been able to address the challenges like accessibility, availability and affordability in cancer care in India for over 6 years now.

M|O|C, India’s pioneering and largest chain of community cancer care centers, is proud to announce its first international venture with the inauguration of a new Community Cancer Centre in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, on October 11, 2024. Developed in partnership with Shifa Pan African Hospitals Ltd., this landmark facility marks a significant milestone for M|O|C as it extends its unique cancer care delivery model beyond Indian borders for the first time. The new center in Tanzania will offer holistic care, including diagnostics, surgery, chemotherapy, and post-treatment patient support. M|O|C will serve as the knowledge partner, leveraging its extensive experience to improve cancer treatment and outcomes in the region, where over 42,000 new cases are reported annually.

Looking ahead, M|O|C plans to replicate this success within India, aiming to expand its community-based cancer care model across the nation. This approach not only alleviates pressure on larger hospitals but also enhances convenience and access for cancer patients. “This is a historic moment for M|O|C as we go international, bringing our expertise and commitment to accessible cancer care to Tanzania,” said an MOC Spokesperson. “Our partnership with Shifa reflects a shared vision of transforming cancer care delivery across borders and ensuring patients receive the care they deserve closer to home.”

The launch of the Dar-es-Salaam center signifies M|O|C’s dedication to expanding its mission globally, beginning with Africa, and serves as an inspiration for India. M|O|C’s initiatives highlight the importance of community-centric healthcare models that can be replicated to improve cancer care accessibility and outcomes, both internationally and domestically.
