New Delhi [India], October 3: Dr Savitha Rani, widely known as the “Jalayoga Star of India,” has recently added another accolade to her impressive list of achievements. On the 113th birthday of Padma Shri Dr. Saalumarada Thimmakka, an icon of environmental conservation, Dr. Rani was awarded the “Saalumarada Thimmakka National Greenery Award” in the Jala Yoga category. The award was presented by the Hon’ble Home Minister of Karnataka, Sri Dr. G. Parameshwar, and the Hon’ble Karnataka Environment and Forests Minister, Sri Eshwar Khandre.

Dr. Savitha Rani, who hails from Bengaluru, has dedicated her life to promoting Jala Yoga, a unique and profound practice that combines yoga and water. Over her two-decade journey, she has gained mastery over 45 water-based asanas and accomplished incredible feats, such as an eight-hour nonstop Jala Yoga session. Her dedication to popularizing this unique discipline extends beyond national boundaries—she has showcased her skills on global platforms, including the prestigious Kumbha Mela in 2022.

According to Dr. Rani, Jala Yoga offers a deep connection between the mind, body, and spirit while interacting with the healing properties of water. It was her mother who first challenged her to perform yoga on water over a decade ago, a challenge that eventually led Dr. Rani down a path of numerous near-drowning experiences but ultimately to an impressive mastery of the practice.

Speaking of this journey, she said, “Yoga, ever since its origin, has been evolving continuously and has reached across the globe. Yoga means ‘to unite’—to create a union between the mind, body, and spirit, as well as between the individual and the universe.”

Practicing yoga on water is not just about physical postures but also involves elements of meditation, pranayama (breath control), and swimming. For Dr. Rani, mastering these water-based asanas was no easy feat, requiring immense focus, self-discipline, and a strong determination to maintain balance on an unstable surface.

“I have been practising Jala Yoga for 24+ years,” she noted.

Dr. Rani has been actively involved in spreading awareness about Jala Yoga’s benefits, not only through performances but also through lectures and workshops, aiming to educate and inspire others about the unique practice. Though she refrains from directly teaching due to the time-intensive nature of the art, her efforts to share her knowledge have made her a prominent advocate for this discipline.

In addition to her dedication to Jala Yoga, Dr. Savitha Rani recently used her platform to inspire social responsibility. A few months ago, during the election season, she conducted a special Jala Yoga campaign encouraging citizens to exercise their fundamental right to vote. Recognizing that voting is the cornerstone of democracy, she seamlessly linked her message of balance and unity in yoga to the importance of civic engagement.

Reflecting her belief in the union between mind, body, and community, Dr. Rani’s campaign emphasized that just as balance is crucial in practicing Jala Yoga, it is equally essential to maintain balance in a functioning democracy. Her impactful campaign served as a reminder to the public of the importance of participating in shaping their collective future.

With her recent recognition through the Saalumarada Thimmakka National Greenery Award, Dr. Savitha Rani has solidified her role not only as a yoga practitioner but also as an advocate for both environmental stewardship and social responsibility. Her inspiring journey continues to bridge the gap between individual well-being and communal action, making her a true symbol of resilience and positive change.
