Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], September 20: Protests supporting the victims of the RG Kar Hospital incident in West Bengal have intensified, as the Sadhu Samaj has initiated an indefinite fast. The primary demands of the Sadhu Samaj are swift justice for the victims and ensuring the safety of women in the state.

The sadhus emphasized the crucial role of doctors, stating, “Doctors are like gods because they repeatedly save lives; their safety should be a priority for the government.” The Sadhu Samaj clarified that their movement is not politically motivated, but a moral duty to stand in support of the doctors.

On the other hand, the junior doctors who are on strike have yet to decide whether to end their protest, despite several of their key demands being met. These include the appointment of senior IPS officer Manoj Kumar Verma as the new Kolkata Police Commissioner, replacing Vineet Goyal. Additionally, the state government has removed several senior officials, including Director of Health Services Debashis Halder, Director of Medical Education Kaustav Nayak, and Deputy Commissioner of Kolkata Police’s North Division Abhishek Gupta. These changes were made following a meeting between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the striking doctors.

The Sadhu Samaj’s demands go beyond swift justice; they also seek concrete assurances regarding women’s safety in West Bengal. Alongside the sadhus, large numbers of people from Bengal have gathered in support of the movement. All eyes are now on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with hopes that she will soon address the demands of the Sadhu Samaj.
