Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India] July 29 : Child Help Foundation, a pan-India non-profit, child-centric organisation, joined hands with WIRC & WICASA on World Heritage Day to clean Velankanni Beach in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Cleaning the beaches by making it garbage- and plastic-free and restoring marine biodiversity is another core initiative of the NGO.

The rise in urban tourism in the past few decades has contributed to marine plastic pollution, with huge amounts of plastic and garbage ending up in rivers and getting carried into the oceans, damaging the marine ecosystem.  The study found that plastic litter from tourism alone accounted for 40%–96% of all beach litter. In partnership with other NGOs and corporations, CHF’s beach cleaning initiative has transformed many beaches, making them cleaner and more plastic-free.

Speaking on the beach cleaning initiatives, Mr. Shaji Varghese, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Child Help Foundation, said, “Water pollution is one of the major issues impacting the environment. Marine animals can consume this plastic, causing widespread harm. Many sea creatures often die as they get entangled in these plastics and other garbage. It is our duty as responsible citizens to ensure that our beaches remain clean, and this event was an attempt to ensure the same. The beach cleaning initiative was also aimed to create awareness and encourage others to do the same.”

The beach cleaning event saw 100 CHF volunteers come together to make Velankanni Beach cleaner and save the lives of many marine animals. Approximately 200 kg of waste was collected through tireless and selfless efforts by the volunteers of Child Help Foundation. The collective effort could save up to 6,000 marine lives.

Similarly, in honour of Global Volunteering Month, Child Help Foundation collaborated with Marsh McLennan as a part of their Employee Engagement Initiative to clean the famous Juhu Beach in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Through collective hard work, hundreds of kilograms of waste were collected, saving countless marine lives.

Overall, Child Help Foundation has saved 2,09,33,460 marine lives through their beach cleanups. Child Help Foundation has made a positive impact on the lives of 48,45,101 people across 12 sustainable development goals in the last thirteen years.

Child Help Foundation looks forward to conducting more such beach clean-up events soon and is open to collaborating with CSR partners for the same. Partners can reach out through the website https://childhelpfoundation.in/ or social media, for collaborative initiatives.
