New Delhi (India), July 1: India’s ethnic wear industry is a vibrant and integral part of its rich cultural heritage. This industry, valued at billions, continues to thrive as it blends traditional aesthetics with modern sensibilities. Ethnic wear, encompassing sarees, lehengas, salwar suits, and kurtis, is not just clothing; it is an expression of art, culture, and individuality. Each piece tells a story, representing the diverse tapestry of India’s regions and communities. The industry’s resilience and adaptability have allowed it to cater to both domestic and international markets, making it a global phenomenon.

With the rise of fashion-conscious consumers, the demand for high-quality ethnic wear has surged. Today’s buyers seek a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, leading to an evolution in the industry. Small businesses and local artisans are at the heart of this transformation, bringing unique designs and sustainable practices to the forefront.

One such inspiring story of passion and perseverance in the ethnic wear industry is that of Geeta Kumari, the founder of the brand KL GIBA.

A Journey from Corporate Life to Ethnic Fashion Entrepreneur

Geeta Kumari, hailing from Rupnagar, Punjab, epitomizes the spirit of entrepreneurship and resilience. Armed with a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) degree, Geeta initially embarked on a corporate career, working for a reputable company in Chandigarh. However, her true calling lay in her long-standing passion for stitching and designing, a hobby she had nurtured since her college days.

“I completed my graduation with a BCA degree. I was working for a well-reputed company in Chandigarh. I have enjoyed stitching and designing since my college days,” Geeta reminisces.

It was a video about unstitched suits from Chandni Chowk that sparked the idea of starting her own venture. Inspired and motivated, she used her savings to buy suits from Delhi and began selling them from home while continuing her job. However, managing both commitments became untenable, leading her to make a life-altering decision. “I realized that I couldn’t continue both. At that time, I had only one option: to choose between my job or my business. Finally, I resigned from my job to pursue my business full time,” Geeta recalls.

The initial phase of her entrepreneurial journey was fraught with challenges. Her father was skeptical and unsupportive, questioning her decision to leave a stable job for what he saw as a risky venture. “Why did you leave your job? You are wasting time and money for minimal returns,” her father would say. Despite the lack of support, Geeta persevered. With her mother and sister as her pillars of strength, she managed to move her business from home to a rented shop. Her mother, in particular, was a source of unwavering encouragement, often telling her, “You will definitely do something big one day.”

Tragedy struck just as things seemed to be falling into place. Geeta’s mother passed away due to a heart attack, just before Geeta’s marriage, which was scheduled for March 9, 2023. Overwhelmed by grief, she postponed her marriage and struggled to find the strength to continue. However, after a few months, she decided to honor her parents’ memory by creating a brand named KL GIBA. “‘K’ represents my mother’s name, and ‘L’ stands for my father’s name,” Geeta explains.

Through KL GIBA, Geeta continues to honor her parents’ legacy, bringing the rich heritage of Indian fashion to women everywhere.
