This surge, from 1488 in 2022 to 2178 in 2023, indicates a growing focus on innovation and technological advancement within the country’s semiconductor industry.

    The study, conducted through extensive searches and utilising various patent databases, identified domestic and international players contributing to the rise in patent applications. This highlights India’s growing recognition as a potential leader in the semiconductor field.

    Pivotal Findings of the Study

    • Surge in Patent Filings: The number of patent applications nearly doubled in 2023, showcasing India’s commitment to innovation in the semiconductor sector.
    • Diverse Players: Both international companies like Qualcomm and Huawei and Indian institutions like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are actively filing patents, creating a vibrant innovation ecosystem.
    • Focus on Cutting-Edge Technologies: Patent filings focus on advanced technologies like integrated circuit (IC) packaging, memory circuits, 5G implementation, and sensors.

    IITs Lead the Way in Conventional Filings

    Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) emerged as the top domestic applicant with 119 conventional patent filings. These filings covered various semiconductor technologies, including integrated chips, sensors, and electronic circuits. Notably, IIT Kanpur submitted the highest number of applications (22) among the IITs, showcasing their leading role in semiconductor research.

    International Players Show Strong Interest:

    Qualcomm, Huawei, Vivo Mobile Communication, and Hitachi Energy are international companies actively filing patents in India. Their applications include advanced IC packages, memory circuits, 5G technology, and power semiconductors.
