Originating from the teachings of Harichand Thakur, who founded the Matua sect of Hinduism, the Matua Mahasangha, headquartered in Thakur’s ancestral village, Orakandi, Faridpur, Bengal Presidency (now in Bangladesh), has been instrumental in organizing devotees and preserving the community’s cultural heritage.
